About Us

Philia is Washington DC’s premier Nanny and Home Care Agency. Philia employs nannies who are truly invested in the personal growth of your child. We screen our Nannies for a true passion of caregiving.

Our Nannies design activities that are age appropriate to foster learning and teach socialization skills and they love excursions to playgrounds, the zoo and other child friendly venues. Your children and the Nanny will have FUN together and she will treat your children as if they were her own.

Philia provides on-going training for the Nannies, to stay current on the best practices of child care and so they have a good understanding of child development milestones and how to help your child reach them.

LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF HOUSEHOLD EMPLOYERS

Nannies are not independent contractors but are employees of the family for whom they work. For this reason, parents who employ a nanny must take the steps necessary to establish themselves as legitimate employers. These steps include securing a Federal Identification Number with the IRS (by completing form SS-4) and obtaining an employer identification number from the state in which the family resides (by contacting the state office that handles employment). Parents may also have to report “a new hire” with the office that handles employment in the state where the family resides.

Federal law also requires that all nanny employers pay a portion of their employee’s Social Security taxes, state unemployment taxes, and in some states, workers’ compensation.

Parents must also file the proper year end tax forms and supply their nanny with a W-2 form by January 31st of each year. Parents must also file form W-3 with the Social Security Administration by February 28th of each year.

All of Philia's caregivers, to include nannies, are EMPLOYEES of Philia. They are NOT independent contractors. We have a TIN, we pay a portion of employee's taxes, unemployment insurance and workers compensation. Furthermore, we have liability insurance. Our employees are our family. They get paid leave and are offered medical insurance. I do not know where this "Anonymous" poster gets her information but it is patently incorrect.

Anonymous, DC Metro Area - 03/06/2018

Philia Agency is working outside Statutory and Common Law in the DC Metro Area. They are not legally allowed to refer a Nanny to a family, and be the third party receiving and distributing the Nanny Wages. Once a referal for a Nanny has been made the family legally has to pay the Nanny either through wage company that retains Medicare & Social Security or the family must pay the Nanny the wages weekly or biweekly.

This company is manipulating the definition of the Law for Domestic Workers in DC and is liable for a class action lawsuit under the law. Since the parents who employee the Nanny decide the place and how the work is done legally they are the direct employees. Nannies ARE NOT SubContractors but employees of the family and the company Philia has opened themselves for Civil Litigation, and the Parents and Families using this agency as well.

Philia was a great find for us and I strongly recommend giving them a call if you need care of any length in the DC area. We have worked with Philia for almost one year now and have nothing but a great experience. We hired our after school nanny through Philia, and she has been an excellent fit--responsible and tremendously caring. Philia also made finding after school only care easy, something that can be hard to find in the DC area. It has also been a year of travel and work disruptions for us, and Philia has never failed to find us great care to fill in when needed. They have great caregivers and reasonable rates. I would definitely recommend taking a look!
