LEGAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF HOUSEHOLD EEMPLOYERS

Nannies are not independent contractors but are employees of the family for whom they work. For this reason, parents who employ a nanny must take the steps necessary to establish themselves as legitimate employers. These steps include securing a Federal Identification Number with the IRS (by completing form SS-4) and obtaining an employer identification number from the state in which the family resides (by contacting the state office that handles employment). Parents may also have to report “a new hire” with the office that handles employment in the state where the family resides.

Federal law also requires that all nanny employers pay a portion of their employee’s Social Security taxes, state unemployment taxes, and in some states, workers’ compensation.

Parents must also file the proper year end tax forms and supply their nanny with a W-2 form by January 31st of each year. Parents must also file form W-3 with the Social Security Administration by February 28th of each year.

We were having a difficult time finding a nanny for after school care, and so we decided to pay the premium to have a professional agency take over our search for us. We are busy professionals and hoped that an agency would streamline the process and also bring us higher quality candidates. Our experience started fine -- we completed the questionnaire and had a pleasant conversation with their representative to discuss our needs. However, as the process progressed we were more and more disappointed. The agent searching on our behalf contacted us several times, re asking questions that we had already answered in the questionnaire, and in previous emails. So that just didn't seem like a good use of our time given how much we were paying for the service. And then the biggest disappointment was when they scheduled phone interviews for us with their candidates. We arranged our vacation schedule to be available at the times they selected and were told we would revive calls from the candidates. Not one of their three candidates actually called us at the scheduled time. Two of them called at various points several hours later with very weak excuses (one said the "weather" had her "screwed up."). Clearly these were not the kind of highly responsible individuals you'd want caring for your child. So we called the agency, and they refunded our money at least. But the whole process turned out to be an enormous waste of our time.

Nannies work for a living. Sometimes the reality is they can't work for less than in the range of $20-30/hour for 1-2 kids because in the DC area you have to pay housing and living expensees and some nannies can't allow themselves to be exploited in a domestic setting. Be truthful and ask yourself if you where planning to pay the Nanny appropriate wages or if you where parents planning to live off of your domestic worker!

After a week and a half of waiting and on the day we were to meet our new nanny, I emailed and called our coordinator, Melissa, multiple times for information. Each email reply stated she'd call at a certain time, but never did. The day we were supposed to meet our nanny and get to know her and take her to lunch was the day Melissa finally called back (an hour and 15 mins after the time she stated she would) saying she had a family emergency. I told her we weren't happy with the service and would like a supervisor to contact us. Melissa didn't even try to resolve the issue, nor did she mention if she had a nanny ready for us. When Elise (or Alise, I'm not sure on spelling) called, she apologized and I told her that after a week and a half of waiting, we were disappointed and done and to refund our money for failing to provide services. She commented that she'd request the refund from the Board and mentioned that if she did that then I wouldn't give a negative review because they didn't have any and that she'd notify the board of my intent to write a negative review. No Elise, you don't threaten to keep money in lieu of a review. Shame. Now my refund request is "under review". If I get my refund, maybe I'll give this another star. We didn't have a good experience and we recommend that people look elsewhere for childcare.

If I was the owner of a Nanny Agency in DC I would screen very very carefully the Parent family to make sure that they are paying a minimum living wage to their Nanny. That would usually fall between. $18.00 to $30.00 per hr and higher. Some parents are not realistic. They are no able to afford a Professional Nanny. They would probably be better of doing a Nanny Share if they are unable to pay their Nanny. As Parents with children the first thing you should learn is to STOP exploiting your domestic workers. These domestic workers where also once children and the children of other parents. Simply because they have grown up doesn't give you the right to exploit them either. Learn to be honest with yourselves. No one will want a Nanny Job that doesn't pay appropriate wages. You can't expect anyone to be interested in a job if they will not be compensated appropriately for their work. And I thought a Nannny Agency will find you Nanny employes if you can't pay descent wages.

This agency is a scam... they don't even do background check on their nannies... please be careful. I asked the nanny they sent and she told me that they didn't do a background check on her, and didn't pay her on time.

I needed childcare for a date night with my husband. We decided to go out at the last minute. I was just really pleasantly suprise by the last minute service and the quality of the Nanny Georgetown Nanny sent. I felt really comfortable leaving my 4 children in the hands of that Nanny and that feeling improved the quality of the night.

These reviews were so contradicting to each other that I called the company. Im an attorney in DC and I needed a nanny to help manage my household. I am very satisfied with the service that I received. I was told by staff that there are a few disgruntled nannies who were fired by the company trying to make waves. The standards of the company seem to be pretty high. Again, I had a positive experience.

My experience was seamless. I am not sure why the reviews are so inconsistent. I just hired a nanny through Georgetown and she said that the company is really picky about the candidates they choose. I think that may account for some of the negativity. Granted, it was not the cheapest process but I do believe I got what I paid for. Im happy.

Georgetown Nanny, Inc. Georgetown Nanny Contacts Informations Posted: The Real Facts Unprofessional, cursing boss, does not pay on time Complaint Rating: 83 % with 6 votes Contact information: Georgetown Nanny, Inc. Washington, District of Columbia United States georgetownnanny.com From the first appearance this company seems pleasant and personal, but this company is nothing shy of professionalism. As an employee you will constantly experience changing of the rules, refusal to pay workers on time, as well as over time. President gets personal when you the employee speak up to protect yourself. She is also not concerned about her clients, but with her own selfish satisfaction, even when you the client is pleased with your nanny's service. She will absolutely deny parents a stable nanny and environment for your child, just to feed her ego. President and Operations Manager are very nasty individuals as well as POWER HUNGRY; that are only professional on the surface. ***WARNING for ALL Nannies and Families. "Hired at Your Own Risk"

I had to write a review here because I saw these reviews before I used the service. The negatives are so not true. I had the best experience with Georgetown Nanny Nannies and staff. I have a special needs child that is very difficult to find care for. Melissa waived the application fee until my husband and I were able to speak to possible candidates for our Nanny position. We are very happy with our choice of Nanny and agency.

Melissa was awesome! I was not feeling confident about leaving my new baby with a stranger. Each Nanny that we interviewed was better than the last one. We hired a nanny that I still feel wonderful about 3 months later. I'm writing this review because we went back and used Georgetown Nanny's staffing service for the children at our wedding. Everything was flawless. I'm really happy with this service.

Georgetown Nanny Agency- Don’t ever use their services DO NOT YOU USE GEORGETOWN NANNY AGENCY FOR YOUR NANNY SERVICES. THE BOSS MELISSA WALKER IS UNPROFESSIOANL, RUDE AND VERY DISHONEST. I paid a registration fee of 495 non-refundable.. I signed up for the staffing placement that cost 28.50 an hour. After that, I paid for 72 hours so 28.50*72= 2052. HERE IS MY EXPEREICNE; She sent Nanny A. I was not allowed to interview HER but briefly meet and leave then with my 8 months old. Nanny A complained asked me about how much money I will be paying to her. I told her that I am paying the agency. The day she came, I called her on my phone to check in and she said if I want to speak with her I need to pay HER extra for talking to ON HERr phone. I mentioned this to the agency and they agreed to send nanny B. nanny B on the second day Nanny B texted me @5am that she has a family emergency and is at the hospital. At that time the emergency number to Georgetown Nanny agency rings out and I have to stay home from work. Agency calls ME as 10am and send another Nanny C. I briefly met her. Nanny C showed. On the first day, she is sang religious son to my kid and distributed religious text in my home. Day 2 for Nanny C . I a sked her to do the baby laundry and Nanny C complained about doing baby laundry. Nanny C said it is too much work. I called the agency and tell her that nanny c does no want to do baby laundry. Agency said they will send a replacement. Send me an email to that effect but never did. Nanny C showed up again 1 ½ hour late. Told me that her son is in the hospital and she did not have my number to call and let me know. Nanny did not work that day cause I had to make other arrangements. Now Georgetown Agency wants o charge me for 4 hours for when Nanny C did not work. The Director also refused to refund my money reasonable 855 to my credit card. She said she will put through the refund within 30 days. That’s after my credit card provider charges me interest. I now have to sue her and the agency. Please note that all the Nanny were unqualified that they sent.
